What a rewire actually involves

A rewire replaces branch-circuit wiring in the agreed scope — the wiring that carries power to the outlets, switches, and fixtures in the home — with new cable, new devices; including adding ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) and arc-fault circuit-interrupter (AFCI) protection where code requires it. This can be a very extensive job, but it doesn't have to be exhaustive. It is a construction project, not a single repair. Survey, planning, permitd with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), cutting out the old wires and device boxes, actually running the wires and fishing (or pulling wire through closed walls and voids), installing new boxes and devices, hooking up everything in the panel, testing, inspection, and possible patching the walls and ceilings where holes were unavoidable (not always included in the electrical contractors scope). So yes it can be a daunting job to consider, however proper preparation can make it flow seamlessly smooth.

What the electrician finds and what gets decided

A rewire can start with a pattern, not one event: a breaker that keeps tripping on the same circuit, outlets that feel warm, two-prong outlets or ungrounded three-prong outlets, or a mix of wiring types where additions meet the original house. Power that cuts out without tripping a breaker, is another sign, and the survey traces it to hidden junctions, or wire taps buried in the walls. Repeated problems across rooms call for broader diagnosis across the branch-circuit system, rather than treating one device as the cause. A simple repair to an outlet that's not working may find half the house is ran on one circuit, or worse is old failing wires, like brittle aluminum.

For occupants, safe action stops at observation: noting which breaker tripped, what was running, and which areas lost power. Affected loads get switched off or unplugged before a tripped breaker is reset once. A breaker that trips again stays off, and a licensed electrician needs to be called. If you notice arcing, a burning smell, buzzing, or other signs of failure, do not approach, and a breaker in that condition is not reset. Smoke or active fire means leaving the area and calling 911. The dead-front cover stays in place — the panel cover that blocks access to live parts — and devices are not pulled and wiring is not spliced.

The electrician maps which breaker serves which outlets, devices, and areas, inventories the wiring types present, checks attic and crawlspace access, and opens device boxes to look at terminations, where wires connect to devices. Older wiring types change the plan, so they get identified up front. During an ABest Pros panel check on October 3, 2026, in a 1960s raised home, cloth-insulated branch wiring was found brittle at the terminations — the kind of finding that can turn a device swap into a rewire.

\"Oh but its been working for X many of years, why does it all of a sudden need to be replaced?\" - One might say. A good electrical installation can last decades, but will still age and fall short of newer safer code changes. Electrical safety is not an afterthought, it's a preventative measure to save persons and property. In other words, when you see warning signs, you don't wait for a catastrophic failure, because it could be catastrophic.

Partial or full

A partial rewire replaces wiring in one area or on a few circuits. A full rewire replaces all the branch circuit wiring through out the house, The choice turns on the age and condition of the wiring in the walls, how much of it is failing, and how much disruption makes sense in one job. If the problem is confined to one addition, one room, or a few circuits, and the rest of the system tests as sound, limited work can make sense. If wiring is old throughout the house, mixed across eras, or damaged in several places, replacement can make more sense than continued spot repairs.

A partial rewire can cost less up front. It can cost more in the long run if the circuits left in place later need replacement — then access, wall repair, and disruption are paid for twice. Where aluminum branch wiring is the issue, CPSC guidance covers both complete copper replacement and specific connection-repair methods, and the repair, remediate, or rewire choice lays out when remediation at the connections is enough and when replacement is the call.

What gets agreed on before starting

Everything gets put down in a written agreement before work begins: which circuits go, which stay, and what new circuits the house needs. Wire types get reveled here too — which wire belongs where in the new work depends or relevent code and AHJ. The written agreement states who patches the unavoidable holes, and whether texture and paint are included. The permit and inspection steps are confirmed along with time frames of this process, specific to the AHJ. A written agreement lets proposals be compared on what is included, not on one bottom-line figure, because you want the best results in this type of job, not the cheapest price.

One question to settle in writing: Is the panel or the service part of a rewire? A rewire is branch-circuit wiring replacement. Panel replacement may be done alongside it but is a distinct item. A service upgrade is a distinct job — it increases service capacity and involves utility coordination and changes to the service equipment as a whole. A new panel does not replace old branch wiring. A rewire does not automatically include a service upgrade. Whether any of the three is included must be stated in writing.

The cost drivers are physical, not arbitrary. House size and circuit count set the amount of wire and devices. Access strongly affects labor: a house with open attic and crawlspace needs less wall opening than one without that access. Wall repair, panel and service work, and occupancy all add to the scope. The cost is skilled labor, materials, and permit and inspection charges where the AHJ requires them. Houses differ in access, wall repair, and panel work, so pricing varies.

A licensed, experienced electrician will lay out the full plan before you need to sign anything. You will actually know what devices and fixtures will be grouped together before work starts.

What happens inside the house during the work

The job runs in phases. Rough-in is the phase when wiring goes in before walls are closed up. Trim-out is the stage when devices and fixtures go in after the walls are closed. This mainly apples to open wall, or fully gutted homes.

When doing a closed wall rewire the electrician may take one section at a time and run two or three of its circuits together in one pass. The circuits serving that section are removed and replaced, both roughin and trim out are completed. On some jobs an electrician works two or three rooms at once. On other jobs the electrician runs new wiring through the whole house while the existing circuits stay energized, then transfers devices over to the new wiring. When new service equipment is part of the agreed work, it goes in before devices transfer. That approach keeps the existing circuits on until the transfer; each circuit goes off for its own transfer, and when service work is included, the service cutover — the switch from the old service to the new — is the broader outage for that job, planned in advance.

The circuit being worked on is de-energized and verified before any wires are touched. From the attic or crawlspace where available, the electrician drills framing where the run requires it, threads wire box to box, and pulls each circuit's home run — the cable run back to the panel — labeling each cable for the circuit it serves. Each circuit is then connected at the panel.

Living in the home during construction

Whether occupants can remain depends on which circuits stay on during the work. Staying in the home has to be agreed in writing. A vacant house is easier to work on — no occupants to work around.

Walls and openings

With drywall and attic or crawlspace access, fishing through small holes is the approach. A full gut down to the studs is not required to complete a rewire; where fishing is viable, it plus targeted openings complete the work. Small fishing holes are closed up as the work proceeds; larger openings, where needed, are cut and finished as agreed in writing. This can be an issue where plaster, wall paper, or other specialty wall coverings are in place.

What makes a rewire last comes down to your contractors standards:

• Splices and junction boxes minimized — as few as the layout allows, so there are fewer connections to fail.

• Devices connected with pigtails — short jumper wires — rather than daisy-chained through each device. This prevents one device carrying all of the amprage.

• High Performance materials such as 3M wire nuts, rather then what ever cheap connector comes with the fixture or device.

• Never using Wagos, or pinch connectors, like the ones found on the back of some devices. This type of connection is prone to failure.

• Grounding and bonding in the new work checked and intact.

• Circuit directory at the panel labeled to match what was installed, so the panel record reflects the finished work.

• Most importantly is following manufacturer’s instructions, inluding proper torq at each terminal on every device.

• Using proper sealing methods, whether is sealing the plugs on an outdoor box or fireproofing the small fish hole drilled in the top/bottom stud. These details matter

How access problems and unexpected findings are handled

Fishing does not work in every house. When it does not, the plan changes. The obstacles are no usable attic or crawlspace access to the run, solid or grouted masonry, spray-foam-filled cavities, and obstructions in the cavity. Where the survey finds solid or grouted masonry, the written agreement states the chosen route instead of fishing — for example, a surface raceway (conduit) on the interior face of the wall, a shallow channel cut into the wall, or a reroute through attic/crawlspace framing. Where spray foam, blocking, or no usable attic or crawlspace access prevents fishing, the electrician cuts targeted openings along the run.

The process is to pause, show the finding, and update the agreement in writing. Work proceeds only after the revised agreement is approved with the finding in view.

Finishing, inspection, and handoff

Where walls are opened and the permit requires a rough-in inspection, the AHJ inspects the rough-in before anything is concealed. Then the walls are closed per the agreement, and trim-out follows. Receptacles and switches are matched to each room. GFCI and AFCI protection are installed where code requires it. Grounding and bonding in the new work are verified intact, and the labeled circuit directory at the panel is checked against what was installed. Final inspection, where the permit requires one, follows trim-out.

Before leaving, the electrician makes sure nothing is left exposed — no open splices, no open boxes, no energized conductors left bare, no loose fixtures. Everything is clean, level and/or plumb; then each circuit and device is tested, then retested again during the walk-through. Before-and-after photos go out with the invoice. The new wiring is left as agreed — concealed behind walls, or in a surface raceway where the agreement calls for that route — and the walk-through ends with the house handed back, tested and made safe.

What a rewire actually involves

There's alot to consider when you get your house rewired.

What's it gonna take to retire a house.
