A 100-amp electrical service can be enough for some homes. Other homes need more capacity, especially when electric heating, water heating, cooking, vehicle charging, or other large loads are involved. The answer comes from a load calculation — not the house's age or the number of empty breaker spaces.

To identify your existing service, start with the rating on the main service disconnect. Then have an electrician verify that the meter socket, service equipment, and conductors are appropriate for that rating. A number on one label does not tell the whole story.

How to check your home's electrical service size

You can gather useful information without removing a panel cover or opening electrical equipment.

Find the main service disconnect

Look for a breaker or disconnect labeled \"main\" or \"service disconnect.\" Its amp rating may be printed on the breaker handle or equipment label.

Do not assume it is inside the house. Some homes have the main disconnect outside near the meter, with a separate panel indoors. Exterior meter-main equipment can combine the meter socket and service disconnect in one assembly.

Some homes also have an exterior emergency disconnect that is not the service disconnect. Follow the equipment labels; if you can't identify the service disconnect, leave that determination to an electrician.

Read the panel label

The label inside the panel door identifies the equipment's rating and other installation information.

A panel rated for 200 amps does not prove the house has 200-amp service. A higher-rated panel can be used in an installation supplied through a smaller main disconnect. The electrician needs to identify the actual arrangement, including whether the panel is service equipment or a downstream distribution panel.

Look for an accessible meter-socket label

The meter socket is the enclosure the utility meter plugs into. If its equipment label is visible from the ground, you can photograph it without opening anything.

Do not confuse markings on the utility meter with the rating of the meter socket or complete service. Manufacturer documentation gives the meter socket its own rating, separate from the service disconnect rating.

Leave sealed compartments closed. If a label is missing or unreadable, that is something the electrician can investigate — not a reason to remove a cover.

Why the main-breaker number needs verification

The main disconnect rating is the starting point. An electrician verifies that the service equipment, meter socket, and conductors are suitable for that rating under the applicable code and utility requirements. Entergy, for example, publishes customer installation standards covering service connections, metering, and related equipment.

This is not always a matter of finding the smallest number. Under NEC 310.12(A), service conductors for a 100- to 400-amp service may have an ampacity of at least 83% of the service rating when they supply the entire load of a one-family dwelling and the section's other conditions are met. This is a conductor-sizing allowance; it does not change the service rating.

The practical question is whether the installation is correctly sized and protected — not whether every component carries an identical printed number.

Is 100-amp service enough for a house?

It can be. A house with gas heating, gas water heating, and relatively modest electrical loads may have very different requirements from an all-electric house.

An electrician determines the required capacity using an applicable electrical load calculation. That calculation considers the home's general loads, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and proposed additions. It also applies the code's demand factors and rules for loads that do not operate simultaneously.

It is not a matter of adding up the numbers on all the breakers.

Before deciding whether 100 amps is enough, identify loads such as:

Electric resistance heating or heat-pump auxiliary heat
Electric water heating
Electric ranges, ovens, and clothes dryers
Additional air-conditioning systems
EV charging equipment
Pool, spa, workshop, or other substantial electrical loads
Planned additions or appliance conversions

Those are inputs to the evaluation — not automatic reasons to replace the service. The existing loads and proposed changes need to be considered together.

What does the electrical code require?

NEC 230.79(C) requires a service disconnect rated at least 100 amps, 3-wire, for a one-family dwelling. That is a minimum requirement, not a statement that every house can operate adequately on 100 amps.

Louisiana uses the National Electrical Code with state amendments (Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 17, Part I, § 115). This reflects the current code — always check with your AHJ for the requirements that apply to your address.

If your house has an older service, its acceptability cannot be determined from the amp rating alone. Have the condition, existing loads, and proposed work evaluated.

Does an empty breaker space mean I have room for more load?

Not necessarily. There are two different questions:

Is there an approved place to install the new circuit breaker?
Can the panel, feeder, and service support the additional electrical load?

An empty breaker position does not answer the second question. Available electrical capacity has to be evaluated using the existing installation and an applicable load calculation.

Likewise, a panel with no empty spaces does not by itself prove that the utility service needs to be enlarged. The circuit-layout problem and the capacity question need separate evaluation.

Does a tripping main breaker mean I need 200 amps?

Not by itself. A main breaker that trips during heavy electrical use needs diagnosis before anyone recommends larger equipment. Record which appliances were operating and whether the main breaker or an individual circuit breaker tripped.

For more on that distinction, see Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping?.

Do not install a larger breaker as a trial fix. Increasing a breaker rating requires verification that the equipment and conductors are suitable for the proposed installation.

What about a meter socket marked \"320\"?

A \"320\" marking can be confusing because it appears on equipment used in services commonly described as 400-amp.

Class 320 metering equipment may be rated 320 amps continuous and 400 amps maximum. Some residential arrangements supply two 200-amp disconnects; other products use a single 400-amp disconnect.

The marking identifies an equipment rating. An electrician still needs to verify the complete configuration before describing the service.

What happens during an electrical service evaluation?

A useful evaluation should answer more than \"what number is on the breaker?\"

1. Identify the existing arrangement

The electrician locates the service disconnect and determines how power reaches the home's panels. This establishes which equipment is part of the service and which panels are downstream.

2. Check equipment ratings and condition

The meter socket, disconnect, panel, service conductors, and connections need evaluation as part of the existing installation. Equipment selection and service connections also have to meet the serving utility's requirements.

If aluminum service conductors are present, do not assume they raise the same issue as older small-gauge aluminum branch-circuit wiring. Those are different applications. The guide to aluminum wiring repair, remediation, and rewiring addresses the branch-circuit question separately.

3. Review what you want to add

Tell the electrician about planned equipment before the calculation is completed. An EV charger, electric tankless water heater, workshop, addition, or change from gas to electric appliances can materially change the project being evaluated. The calculation needs to reflect the loads included in the proposed work.

4. Calculate the required capacity

The electrician applies a calculation method appropriate to the house and project, including the applicable demand factors and heating or cooling requirements.

This is the step that determines whether the proposed loads fit within the existing service.

5. Explain the work actually needed

The recommendation should distinguish among adding a circuit, changing panel equipment, and increasing the service capacity. Those are not interchangeable descriptions.

Replacing a panel with one rated for more amps does not, by itself, increase the home's service capacity. For a capacity increase, the electrician checks the meter socket, disconnect, service-entrance conductors, any feeder supplying a downstream panel, and the applicable utility requirements. The service conductors must be sized under the applicable code rules for the service and load. On an overhead service, that review also includes the riser or mast and its applicable conduit and support requirements. Existing parts may be reusable if they are suitable for the proposed installation; others may need replacement. The proposal should identify what stays, what changes, and which permits and inspections apply.

If a service upgrade is proposed, ask what equipment will change, what utility coordination is required, and which permits and inspections apply.

Does service size determine generator size?

No. A home's service rating does not directly determine the generator output it needs.

Generator sizing depends on the equipment you want to operate during an outage, running loads, motor starting requirements, and any load-management strategy. Service size remains relevant to understanding the installation and planning the transfer equipment, but it is not a substitute for generator load analysis.

What can you safely check yourself?

Keep your part to accessible labels and observations.

Read the main-breaker rating if it is visible without removing a cover.
Photograph the panel label inside the normal hinged door.
Photograph accessible exterior equipment labels from the ground.
Write down what you want to add and which breakers have been tripping.

Do not remove the panel's inner cover, open sealed meter compartments, pull the meter, or attempt a main-breaker replacement. Turning off the main is not permission to work inside service equipment.

Service work needs an approved plan for disconnecting power and meeting the applicable utility requirements. Entergy's installation standards are one example of the requirements that must be checked before work is planned.

Questions to ask before approving a service upgrade

A clear proposal should help you understand both the need and the scope. Ask:

What service rating did you verify?
What did the load calculation show?
Did the calculation include the equipment I plan to add?
Is the problem service capacity, panel space, equipment condition, or a combination?
Which equipment and conductors will be replaced?
What permits, inspections, and utility coordination apply?
What work is included — and what is excluded?

Those answers are more useful than a recommendation based only on the house's age or a photograph of the breaker panel.
